Scindapsus Mayari Variegata 10.5cm Pot House Plant

Scindapsus Mayari Variegata is a rare, highly variegated climbing aroid prized for its marbled cream, mint and green foliage. The leaves are typically heart-shaped with a soft satin sheen, and each leaf develops a different pattern, making every plant unique. Compared with more common Scindapsus varieties, Mayari Variegata tends to have brighter, more unpredictable variegation and a slower growth habit.

As it matures, it can be grown trailing from a shelf or hanging pot, but it produces larger, more dramatic leaves if trained up a moss pole or plank.

Description

  • Botanical name: Scindapsus Mayari Variegata
  • Plant type: Tropical climbing houseplant
  • Growth habit: Trailing or climbing
  • Mature size indoors: Vines can reach 1–2m indoors with support
  • Leaf colour: Green with cream, white and mint variegation
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate, depending on light levels and warmth

The variegation is unstable, so some leaves may emerge almost entirely green while others may be heavily marbled or nearly white. More light generally encourages stronger variegation, although completely white leaves should be avoided as they do not photosynthesise well.

Care Guide

Light

Scindapsus Mayari Variegata thrives in bright, indirect light. This is the most important factor in keeping the variegation strong.

  • Best position: Near an east or north-facing window, or a few feet back from a bright south or west-facing window
  • Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the pale areas of the leaves
  • Too little light can cause the plant to lose variegation and produce smaller, greener leaves

Watering

Allow the top 2–5cm of compost to dry out before watering.

  • Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away
  • Never leave the pot sitting in water
  • Water less frequently in winter

Overwatering is the most common problem and can quickly lead to yellow leaves and root rot.

Humidity

As a tropical plant, it appreciates moderate to high humidity.

  • Ideal humidity: 60%+
  • It will tolerate average household humidity, but growth may slow and leaf edges may brown
  • A humid room, pebble tray or humidifier can help

Temperature

Keep the plant warm all year round.

  • Ideal temperature: 18–27°C
  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C
  • Keep away from draughts, radiators and cold windows in winter

Soil

Use a loose, airy compost mix that drains well.

A good mix is:

  • 50% houseplant compost
  • 25% perlite
  • 25% orchid bark or coco chips

This helps prevent the roots from staying too wet.

Feeding

Feed once every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

Do not feed during winter when growth naturally slows.

Support

Although it can trail beautifully, Scindapsus Mayari Variegata grows best when given something to climb.

  • Moss poles encourage larger leaves and faster growth
  • Trailing plants stay more compact with smaller foliage

Common Problems

Yellow Leaves

Usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

Brown Crispy Edges

Typically a sign of low humidity or underwatering.

Loss of Variegation

Usually caused by insufficient light. Move the plant somewhere brighter, but still out of direct sun.

Leggy Growth

If the stems become long with large gaps between leaves, the plant is not getting enough light.

Root Rot

Caused by staying too wet for too long. If caught early, remove affected roots and repot into fresh, airy compost.

Propagation

Scindapsus Mayari Variegata can be propagated easily from stem cuttings.

  1. Take a cutting with at least one node and one leaf
  2. Place it in water, sphagnum moss or moist perlite
  3. Keep it warm and in bright, indirect light
  4. Roots usually appear within 2–6 weeks

When propagating, choose a cutting with visible variegation, otherwise new growth may emerge mostly green.

Pet Safety

Scindapsus Mayari Variegata is toxic if eaten, so keep it out of reach of cats, dogs and small children. It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation if ingested.
