Scindapsus Hederaceus Silver 10.5cm Pot House Plant

Scindapsus hederaceus 'Silver' is an elegant trailing aroid with velvety, heart-shaped leaves dusted in silvery markings. The foliage has a soft, satin-like finish, giving the plant a subtle shimmer in bright light. It is a relatively easy-care variety, making it ideal for both beginners and collectors looking for a more refined trailing plant.

The stems naturally trail from shelves and hanging pots, though it can also be encouraged to climb a moss pole where it may develop larger leaves over time.

Description

  • Botanical name: Scindapsus hederaceus 'Silver'
  • Common names: Silver Scindapsus, Satin Silver Vine
  • Plant type: Tropical trailing or climbing houseplant
  • Mature size indoors: Vines can reach 1–2m long
  • Leaf colour: Deep green with silver variegation and a satin sheen
  • Growth rate: Moderate

The leaves are generally smaller and more delicate than those of many other Scindapsus varieties, with a neat trailing habit that makes it particularly well suited to hanging planters or high shelves.

Care Guide

Light

Scindapsus hederaceus 'Silver' prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Place near an east or north-facing window, or a little back from a brighter window
  • It will tolerate lower light, but growth may become slower and the silver colouring less pronounced
  • Avoid direct midday or afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering.

  • Water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom of the pot
  • Empty decorative pots or saucers afterwards
  • Reduce watering during winter

This variety is more forgiving of slight underwatering than overwatering.

Humidity

It grows best in moderate to high humidity.

  • Ideal humidity: 50–70%
  • Average room humidity is usually sufficient
  • Higher humidity encourages larger, healthier leaves and helps prevent brown tips

Temperature

Keep between 18–27°C throughout the year.

  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C
  • Keep away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes

Soil

Use a light, airy potting mix with good drainage.

A suitable mix is:

  • 2 parts houseplant compost
  • 1 part perlite
  • 1 part orchid bark

This mimics the loose, chunky conditions the roots prefer.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

Do not feed during winter.

Pruning and Support

  • Trim long vines if you would like a fuller, bushier plant
  • Cuttings can be placed back into the same pot to thicken the plant
  • A moss pole or trellis will encourage larger foliage if you prefer a climbing look

Common Problems

Yellow Leaves

Usually caused by too much water or poorly draining soil.

Brown Leaf Tips

Often due to low humidity, inconsistent watering or mineral build-up from tap water.

Small Leaves and Sparse Growth

Normally caused by low light.

Silver Colour Fading

The silver sheen becomes less obvious if the plant is kept in too dark a position.

Pests

Occasionally affected by spider mites, mealybugs or thrips, especially in dry indoor conditions.

Propagation

Scindapsus hederaceus 'Silver' is easy to propagate from stem cuttings.

  1. Cut below a node, ensuring each section has at least one leaf
  2. Place the cutting in water, sphagnum moss or moist perlite
  3. Keep warm and in bright, indirect light
  4. Once roots are a few centimetres long, pot into soil

Pet Safety

Scindapsus hederaceus 'Silver' is toxic to pets and people if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs.
